Abstract
Writing a thesis is one of requirements for undergraduate students in Indonesia to obtain their bachelor degree. In its process, the students are supervised by the lecturers. Although there is some research on students' experiences in writing thesis, it appears there is scarcity of documented studies on lecturers' experiences in supervising students' thesis writing. This study aims to explore the phenomenon, in particular identifying the challenges faced by the lecturers in supervision and describing the strategies to overcome the challenges. This study employed qualitative method with a case study approach to gather information about individual experiences from 8 selected lecturers. The data were collected through in-depth interviews and were analyzed thematically. Internal challenges (limited time and lack of expertise) and external challenges (students' lack of motivation, lack of writing skills, lack of English proficiency, inappropriate behavior, and loss of students) were identified. This study also revealed that lecturers used some strategies to deal with challenges, including self-management (managing supervision and studying a new field of study), giving assistance (giving direction to students, giving motivation and advice, giving extra sessions, and correcting students' works), and communication and technological (maintaining communication and employong technology in supervision).
