Abstract

The increasingly modern and complex world has a significant impact on the formation of morality among young people. This research conducts an in-depth analysis of the relevance of Immanuel Kant’s Categorical Imperative in shaping the morality of the younger generation, specifically Generation Z (Gen Z). The main problem addressed by this study is how Gen Z morality is being formed through the TikTok application and whether Kant’s Categorical Imperative remains relevant in shaping the morals of this generation. The research aims to assess how Gen Z's morality is constructed via the TikTok social media platform, an application widely used, especially among the youth. The research method used is philosophical-descriptive analysis. Research data are obtained through a literature review of primary sources, particularly the works of Immanuel Kant, and observation of Gen Z’s moral behavior on the TikTok application. The findings indicate that the morality of Generation Z when using TikTok contradicts Immanuel Kant’s Categorical Imperative. Various acts of "virality" or "trending" presented by the application cannot serve as a formula for a universal law. The moral contradiction between Kant's perspective and the bias of the TikTok application reveals that Gen Z's motivation for moral action is primarily based on self-recognition. Gen Z prefers to gain validation through likes, comments, and content monetization, meaning their actions are no longer based on a valid universal law. Universal morality is being displaced by the standards of TikTok and the dominance of social media algorithms, which are altering the mindset of Generation Z. The relevance of this research is its potential to provide a theoretical contribution to the education of Generation Z in using social media, specifically TikTok, thus fostering a more ethical and civilized digital space for user interaction within the application.
