Abstract

In his homily last June to comedians, Pope Francis mentioned that joy helps break down social barriers, thereby helping to build a culture of sharing and space for connection. So, how was Joy able to break down the social barrier? In order to answer this question, the paper first attempts to discuss the socio-historical background of Proverbs 17.22: "A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones." How did the sage at that time discuss this proverb and how it was used at that time? Secondly, how is the literal perspective of this metaphor, "a cheerful heart is a good medicine," in relation to breaking down the social barrier? Finally, the paper will try to point out the significance of the theological perspective reflected in the joy and a sense of humor in apostolic exhortation Gaudete Et Exsultate (No 122-128).
