Abstract

Romo Mangun and Gus Dur are recognized as figures who have struggled for pluralism and interfaith brotherhood. This research seeks to reexamine this assumption by investigating their thoughts and actions, which differ in many ways. This comparative study aims to show that there are many ways to achieve brotherhood, even through different paths. This paper challenges the density within interreligious relationships. A healthy interreligious relationship is not only achieved through melancholic and romantic processes but also through struggles and efforts that can eventually create a more harmonious society by dismantling structures that perpetuate power. The context of this article is about Romo Mangun’s struggle in defending the residents of Kedung Ombo and Gus Dur’s efforts to advocate for religious freedom for the Kong Hu Cu community.
