Abstract

The experience of God leads man to be aware about themselves. It brings them into two dynamical experiences, tremendum et fascinosum. Both of these experiences significantly influence their daily perspective and actions. This study is an attempt to examine these experiences in greater depth. By using Karl Rahner’s Transcendental Theology, which understand man as beings who always in relationship with God, this study aims to explore the extent to which human life is truly influenced by the experience of God. The Council of Nicaea, actually, had taught about this. The experience of God becomes increasingly manifest through the mystery of the Incarnation of Jesus. Man experiences God not as a distant God, but a very close God.

This study uses a phenomenological qualitative method with an IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis) approach. This method focuses on the subjects’ experiences as they are lived in their daily lives, both individually and in relation to others. The subject involved in this study are nurses working in hospital. The nurses were intentionally chosen because they interact with patients every day, including patients’ family, who come from diverse backgrounds and face various challenges. The subjects totaled five nurses who were randomly selected from different hospitals. The results of the study found that the experience of God among nurses occurs in three main parts: (1) through their basic motivations, (2) their attitudes when dealing with patients, and (3) being a neighbor to patients at the "threshold." Basically, although the experiences shared by the subjects may appear on the surface to be ordinary, which do not immediately indicate the presence of God in these experiences, this study helps both the subjects and the readers realize that every experience, no matter how small, it is ultimately connected and oriented toward God.
