Abstract

This article examines the connection between the ideas of Cyprian of Carthage, particularly in his work De Unitate Ecclesiae, and the First Council of Nicaea. Although they address different theological issues, both Cyprian and the Nicene Council share the same goal: to affirm the true faith (fides vera) and maintain the unity of the Church in the face of heretical teachings. Cyprian emphasized the importance of Church unity based on episcopal authority, while the Nicene Council affirmed the divinity of Jesus Christ as part of the authentic faith (depositum fidei). The teaching by Cyprian in Carthage focused more on the reconciliation of the lapsi and the validity of baptisms performed outside the Church, whereas the Nicene Council addressed the challenge of Arianism, which questioned the divinity of Christ. This study employs a historical-theological method, analyzing the background, texts, and contributions of Cyprian’s teachings in relation to the Nicaea Council.
