Abstract

Abstract

This study intended to analyse the cultural information which were represented in an English textbook entitled “Pathway to English” for senior high school grade XII. This book was written by Indonesia authors Th. M. Sudarwati and Eudia Grace and published by Penerbit Erlangga in 2018. The data of the research were collected from the reading passages, exercises, and pictures in the English textbook. To reveal what categories of cultural information were represented in the English textbook, the materials of the textbook were divided into eight cultural categories developed by Adaskou, et al. (1990), Moran (2001), and Dweik and Al Sayyed (2015), namely food and drinks, places, art, traditional ceremony, social behavior, beliefs and values, history, and person. Then, the cultural contents were categorized into the source culture, the target culture, and the international culture (Cortazzi and Jin, 1999). As the results, the researcher found that all the cultural information was represented in the English textbook. In terms of occurrences, the cultural contents representing the target culture (42.41%) significantly exceeded both the source culture (35.24%) and the international culture (22.35%).
