Abstract

Code-switching is a sociolinguistic phenomenon frequently occurs in our daily life unconsciously. There are different perceptions towards code-switching speakers, since many people do not comprehend why people utilize it. The use of digital media which is quite widespread also makes code-switching recorded in cyberspace such as on YouTube videos.

This research answered two research questions, which were: what are the types of code-switching used in some of Leonardo Edwin’s YouTube vlogs? And what are the functions of code-switching used in some of Leonardo Edwin’s YouTube vlogs? Poplack (1980) and Appel and Muysken (2005) theories were used to code the type and function of each code-switching case.

The results showed 3 types and 5 functions of code-switching revealed in this research. Those 3 types of code-switching were tag-switching (27%), intra-sentential switching (49%), and inter-sentential-switching (24%). Based on the percentage, intra-sentential switching was the highest type occurred in this research. Besides the type of code-switching, the function of each code-switching case was also analyzed. The percentage of each code-switching function were referential function (39%), directive function (35%), expressive function (17%), phatic function (3%), and metalinguistic function (5%). As seen in the percentage, the referential function was the most appeared in this research.
