The Use of Nearpod as a Digital Tool to Promote Student Engagement in Listening

Abstract


Owing to the fact that now several school have started the offline class after more than two years conducting online learning, it becomes a challenge for the teacher to find new alternatives of interactive learning in the face-to-face classroom that will help students to have better engagement than in the online classroom setting. Nearpod, an interactive slide maker platform with plenty of its interactive features, appears to be one of the potential digital tools to promote students engagement. Therefore, the researcher tried to investigate the use of the Nearpod to promote students’ engagement in the offline listening class settings in Grade X SMA Santa Maria Yogyakarta.

The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). Additionally, the researcher used questionnaire and observation checklist as the instruments to collect the data, so that the researcher will able to measure the student engagement in two different perspective during the cycles. The result presented that students engagement were promoted during the learning using Nearpod. It is shown by the increase of the mean of student self-evaluation questionnaire and the number of engagement indicators in the observation checklist which appeared in the classroom.
