Abstract

Songs are one of the media to communicate and deliver a message. Often, songwriters use various kinds of figurative language to convey the message. Yet, understanding the meanings of figurative language sometimes needs efforts.

This study aimed to analyze the types of figurative language and the meaning of each figure of speech in the selected songs of Reruntuh’s album "Water Will Find Me". Four English songs are selected to be analyzed.

This descriptive qualitative study is a document analysis with the data collected from the lyrics of the four English songs in “Water Will Find Me” album. The researcher used Abram’s theory to analyze the types of figurative language and identified the meaning of figurative language using Leech’s theory.

The researcher found five types of figurative language, namely metaphor, paradox, personification, simile, and paradox. Furthermore, the types of meaning in the selected songs of Reruntuh’s lyrics are connotative and thematic. The researcher concluded that all the songs analyzed have the same meaning—the existence of life and relationship with God.
