Abstract

In this paper, researchers elaborate on the design and development of a module, especially for enhancing the English language skills of restaurant staff. The module aims to provide language training to support the professional development and communication needs of restaurant staff because they are required to communicate effectively with foreign customers and colleagues. The process of the design begins with some need analysis which means researchers should do surveys, interviews, and observations to identify the specific English language requirements of restaurant staff and also the language proficiency levels of the staff. Researchers should highlight things related to workplace communication such as customer and staff interactions, menu explanations, and taking orders so that the language skills can be determined with an emphasis on practical application and real-life communication. Based on the need analysis, the module applies communicative and task-based approaches, interactive activities, role-plays, and authentic scenarios based on the restaurant situation. The expected outcome of this research is the module can enhance the English language skills of restaurant staff and make a real-life development for them to communicate with foreign customers.
