Abstract


This research discusses the residence as the center of Javanese. The building has a special position according to the rules in Javanese culture. These rules have been outlined in the form of concentric circles that focus on the Sultan's residence. This research aims to review the position of residential houses in modern era. This study uses qualitative methods and is reviewed by ethnographic analysis. Residential houses in Javanese society are interrelated to the history of the people who are interconnected. Research shows the position of the building is placed based on concentric circles which refers to the concept of Javanese culture. The residence shows a connection between geographical concepts and cultural concepts that reflect social, political, and cultural hierarchies, such as the Prince's residence. The architectural form has its own characteristics of a residential house in general which are related to the cultural values, social and spiritual levels. Apart from that, the position and layout of the residential house represents the views and beliefs of the community which influence the sustainability of their lives. A deeper relationship related to the position of the residence show the complexity in Javanese culture and express the values of Javanese life.
