Abstract

Indonesian local wisdom contains various traditional terms and proverbs that are rich in philosophical, moral, and social meanings. This study examines two philosophical concepts from different cultures, namely the motto ‘Adil Ka’ Talino, Bacuramin Ka’ Saruga, Basengat Ka’ Jubata’ from the Dayak community and the proverb ‘Tonga Blola Hunge Ba’at’ from the Lamaholot culture. The purpose of this study is to analyse the relevance and significance of these two concepts as ethical and spiritual guidelines in a modern context. The study uses descriptive and interpretative methods to reveal the philosophical values contained in both mottos. The results show that the Dayak motto emphasises the importance of social justice, spiritual morality, and gratitude to God as the basis for harmonious life between humans, nature, and the Divine. Meanwhile, the Lamaholot proverb highlights the cosmic duality between heaven and earth, which affirms the relationship between the transcendent dimension and the material world, as well as human responsibility in preserving the land as an ancestral heritage. Both have similarities in emphasising a harmonious balance between humans, God, fellow humans, and nature. In conclusion, these two concepts are relevant as moral and spiritual guidelines for facing modern challenges as well as an important cultural heritage to be preserved.
