Abstract
DESIGNING GAMES AS A TEACHING STRATEGY TO IMPROVE SPEAKING’S FLUENCY AT SMA SANTA MARIA YOGYAKARTA
English speaking proficiency can be undertaken through various tactics such as using audio-visual aids, technology and games. Game-based learning is a teaching strategy by using game foundations to encourage students in participating the tasks. Particularly for speaking, the ability to deliver the speech is a fundamental aspect to communicate. In this research, the researcher considered a phenomenon at SMA Santa Maria Yogyakarta related to speaking proficiency. The major problem was the students had not accustomed to the speaking improvisation and spontaneity. In this research, one problem was formulated: (1) To what extent does game-based learning improve students’ speaking fluency at SMA Santa Maria Yogyakarta? The participants of this research were 10 students of Grade XI Social Major in the academic year of 2022/2023. In this research, the researcher used classroom action research. The researcher collected the data through observation, speaking tests, questionnaires and interview. The result of this research showed there was an improvement in students’ speaking skill. The improvement could be seen from the growth score of the speaking test and the average score of speaking’s fluency. Therefore, game-based speaking activity has been successfully affected students’ ability to speak fluently in detail and more confident.
