Literary work, such as a novel, is one of the tools to express human experiences. One of the literary works is a novel entitled Lord of the Flies, which was written by William Golding. Lord of the Flies is a symbolic novel that has often been discussed in the education field. Understanding the use of the symbols in the novel can help the readers get a meaningful message from the story because sometimes the message cannot directly appear in the story but must be interpreted as the story unfolds. To conduct the study, the researcher answers two research questions. The first research question is “What symbols are found in the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding?” and the second is "What meanings and messages are conveyed through the use of symbolism in William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies?” The first research question is to answer what kind of symbols are found in the novel using theory of symbol by Stanton (1965). The interpretation and the message of the story are answered in the second research question using theory of meaning by Nurgiyantoro (2015) anf fotmalist approach by Shklovsky (1917).
