Abstract

The objective of this research was to investigate ecological and ethical themes in two Arabians, “al-Najm al-Kabīr” and “Fī Jazīrah al-Nūr,” through ecocritical and virtue ethics approaches. These Arabian fairytales were selected for their capacity to illustrate themes of redemption and heroism, both of which are significant and pertinent to the research objective within the context of comparative literary criticism. The data collection method involved an in-depth analysis of selected primary texts. The research findings indicated that both stories contain significant values pertaining to ecological balance and ethical conduct, the global context for sustainable development, and moral education. The research's conclusion was that Arabic fairytales serve as an entertainment and an instrument of education in the context of environmental awareness and sustainability. This research makes a novel contribution by employing an innovative approach to analysing traditional fairy tales through the lenses of ecocriticism and virtue ethics. However, it is not without limitations. The scale of the analysis is constrained to two stories and the focus is on the Arabic context only. To advance the field, it would be beneficial to expand the scope of the sample and include more cultural perspectives, as well as explore broader socio-cultural influences on the development of these stories.
