Abstract

The whaling culture in Lamalera , Lembata, NTT, has become a very important part of the culture and life of the Lamalera people who have lived since long ago. This research aims to reveal the underlying values of the whaling culture in Lamalera that influence the system and way of life of the local people. The research method used a literature study and involved in-depth interviews with local people, and document analysis.

The results of this study revealed several values contained in the whaling culture in Lamalera. Firstly, ecological values. The Lamalera community has very strict customs and norms to ensure the sustainability of marine resources, including whales. This value reflects a deep understanding of the Lamalera people's dependence on the rich marine environment.

Secondly, whaling also reflects strong social values. This whaling culture is not only an economic source or source of livelihood for the local community but also a picture of close relationships between people. Fishermen work together with simple traditional equipment, showing the importance of collaboration in facing the challenges of large whale animals.

Third, whaling in Lamalera emphasises the value of respect for nature, especially the sea. Lamalera people believe in a close spiritual relationship between humans and nature, especially the sea.  Finally, whaling is inseparable from God's participation. Before whaling or before entering the sea, the Lamalera community conducts traditional ceremonies and masses. This shows the importance of God's participation in whaling.

This research concludes that whaling in Lamalera contains a number of relevant values, including sustainability, culture and co-operation. Understanding and respecting these values is key to maintaining the sustainability of whaling, maintaining good relations with others and as a form of gratitude for God's protection.
