Abstract

Sule Kampong (returning home) is a Torajan custom hidden behind the Torajan death ceremony, rambu solo'. Despite being a custom, sule kampong is a mandatory tradition that is binding in nature because it serves as a forum to emphasize identity and strengthen kinship ties. Sule kampong is carried out by putting aside religious motives, emphasizing kinship ties going back to the hometown. This study aims to explain the main motives of the sule kampong tradition, the binding factors behind this tradition, and the challenges of materialism from this tradition. The authors use the literature method in the research process, and involves the personal experiences and views of the authors who has experienced and practiced this tradition. The literature method shows that this tradition has been described in many literatures that emphasize that sule kampong has a high philosophical meaning for the Toraja people. The authors also see this tradition as a highly existent means to bring Torajans together in a bond of 'like-mindedness'.
