Welcome Address by the Rector of Sanata Dharma University

On behalf of Sanata Dharma University, I feel honored to welcome all speakers and participants of The 8th Language and Language Teaching (LLTC 2021). I also would like to extend my warmest regards to all of you. Let us first thanks to God for the grace we have received in preparing this conference. I also wish that the 8th LLTC facilitates a fruitful sharing and exchange of ideas related to the conference’s theme on ‘Post Covid-19: Language Learning Teaching, Linguistic and Literature in Local and Universal Context.’

To everyone's surprise, starting in early 2020, learning was suddenly forced to change due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Internet-based learning is the best choice because the pandemic demands social-physical distancing. Suddenly all parties involved in learning have to adapt so that they can continue to play their roles optimally using internet technology. More than one year experience of using internet-based learning has provided us many experiences, reflections, awareness, and various future imaginations. This is very valuable because all parties have concrete experience of how the taste, atmosphere, dynamics, and struggles in managing internet-based learning are. This experience becomes a very important and valuable asset for developing future education model.

Actually, the need for change and development of this higher education model is not only due to the pandemic and the ease of use of the internet. There is a very basic reason why we need to start a new way of managing modern learning. The basic reason includes two things even though the source is only one, namely the increasingly massive and efficient digital technology, especially the internet. This technology has ushered in human civilization to has properties abbreviated as VUCAD (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous, Disruptive).

The birth of VUCAD world requires new language learning model that can prepare graduates to face the changes and uncertainties of the future. Consequently, learning must be contextual, dynamic, adaptive, and oriented towards the development of strong scientific basic competencies. Only with a solid scientific foundation, a graduate can continue to learn and develop themselves. In addition, language learning must be oriented towards developing the competence of graduates to use and utilize internet technology.

The need for universities to develop new model in educating students is also triggered by the fact that the internet has not only provided abundant yet cheap knowledge but also provides flexibility and accessibility that is cross-border. With the advancement of artificial intelligence technology, this cross-border flexibility concerns not only the diminishing boundaries of space and time but also the boundaries of written and spoken language. Learning resources on the internet can be accessed from anywhere, by anyone, in any language. In a situation like this, educating becomes even more irrelevant if it doesn't take place in a flexible, format-rich manner, and there's no added value. Therefore, there is a need to develop a new framework to support learning in internet-based environment. The framework is actually quite simple: how to create a meaningful and relevant learning experience rather than how to teach great.

Therefore, I position this conference as a highly relevant response to the recent call to all of us in improving our leaning quality while we are witnessing the rapid change of modern learning that is much influenced by sophisticated smart technology. I do hope that the conference becomes a good avenue not only to discuss our research findings but also to facilitate a fruitful dialogue in which sharing of knowledge, values and awareness of language learning takes place with joy and respect to each other. It is through such an orientation that we can proactively contribute to shape up our new generation for the betterment of our society. May the conference be successful and enjoyable. Thank you.

Johanes Eka Priyatma, Ph.D.
Rector of Sanata Dharma University

Welcome Address by the Dean of Education Faculty of Sanata Dharma University

Greetings,

First of all, I would like to welcome all of you to Sanata Dharma University. I hope this virtual encounter does not dampen the excitement and joy of the conference.

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed many things, including the way humans relate and  communicate. Patterns of direct face-to-face communication which was originally the best way to do could not be conducted freely anymore. At the same time, digital technology is developing very fast that it can provide long-distance communication devices that can be accessed by various levels of society. The process of human adjustment to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic has turned out to have shifted the culture towards a culture that is more adherent to the use of digital technology. This new culture that we are in does not seem to be left even if the Covid-19 pandemic is over.

Language and language teaching are certainly changing as well. The presence of digital technology provides greater opportunities for long-distance connections and encourages the presence of increasingly abundant learning resources in cyberspace but at the same time creates problems that need to be addressed. Many students feel that at this time they have lost their learning community, the in-person togetherness that previously could be done does not seem to be easily replaced by a virtual encounter. Teachers and students also have a lot of difficulty navigating the technology needed to participate in distance learning. The problem becomes more complex when we consider the remote areas that do not have telecommunications infrastructure and the limited public access to digital technology because they do not have adequate tools.

I hope the 8th International Language and Language Teaching Conference (LLTC) 2021 can broaden horizons and provide solutions to linguistic problems and language education problems. I also hope that new ideas should be integrated into the current context of education in Indonesia, especially with regard to MBKM which provides wider opportunities for students to study outside campus with various forms of activities.

Finally, I wish you a happy conference, may God bless our good efforts. Thank you.

Dean of Education Faculty of Sanata Dharma University

Welcome Address by the Chairperson of the English Language Education Study Programme (ELESP)

Very warm greetings from the English Language Education Study Programme (ELESP), Sanata Dharma University. I am very grateful to welcome you all to the 8th International Language and Language Teaching Conference (LLTC) 2021 which is done annually by the English Language Education Study Programme, Sanata Dharma University.

On this special occasion, I would like to extend my gratitude to:
Dr. Willy Renandya from Nanyang Technology University, Singapore;
Dr. Jayne Lammers, Associate Professor of Education at the University of Rochester, New York, USA;
Dr. Michael Phillip, Associate Professor of Digital Transformation in the Faculty of Education, Monash University;
Christina Kristiyani, Ph.D., English Language Education Study Programme of Sanata Dharma University;
Fidelis Chosa Kastuhandani, Ph.D., English Language Education Study Programme of Sanata Dharma University;
All presenters and participants of this LLTC 2021;
The committee, who have been working very hard to prepare, organize and make this conference run well.

This International LLTC has come a long way since 2013 and this year is the 8th conference. This year’s conference takes “Post-Covid 19: Language Learning-Teaching, Linguistics and Literature in Local and Universal Contexts” as its theme which is a proper response to the existing situation. The Covid-19 has been around for almost two years and the pandemic has reshaped our way of learning and teaching, shifting from the offline to online learning. Teachers and students meet in a virtual space that is only visible from the screen and the teachers cannot directly observe students’ responses and how they learn and the obstacles they face. Teachers are faced with learners coming from various contexts and the disruption caused by the pandemic has forced us to adjust to the local and universal contexts. Learners’ and teachers’ different contexts, coupled with the limitations of supporting system and equipment in many areas have provided us with ample of challenges as to make learning meaningful and contextual to the students. Students are also challenged to manage their time, become autonomous learners and make the best efforts as to adjust the new ways of learning.

I personally see this LLTC as a moment of getting new perspectives form the experts and respected speakers in order to deal with the new face of language learning and teaching, linguistics and literature in local and universal contexts in the post covid-19. I believe that this conference will be a meaningful sharing moment and beneficial for everybody participating in this event and become an academic party for all of us.

Enjoy and have a fruitful conference. Thank you.

Veronica Triprihatmini

Chairperson of ELESP

Welcome Address by the Chairperson of LLTC 2021 Committee

Dear honorable presenters and participants, ladies and gentlemen,

On this wonderful occasion, on behalf of all the committee members, I’d like to extend my warmest welcome to all of you to the 8th Language and Language Teaching Conference (LLTC) 2021 organized by the English Language Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. This year, the theme is “Post-covid 19: Language Learning-Teaching, Linguistics and Literature in Local and Universal Contexts”.

The covid-19 pandemic that has lasted for one and a half years has caused a massive shift in education, including language teaching and learning. The face as well as the conduct of education will not return into how it was before, as the pandemic is sought to be a long-lasting one. As a consequence, education practitioners are demanded to always be adaptive and innovative in dealing with the pandemic situation and keeping up with the dynamics involved. This year’s theme was selected as we want to invite language education practitioners as well as researchers to share innovations and the cutting edge of language teaching, linguistics and literature in the context of whilst and post covid-19 pandemic. We believe that these issues leave abundant opportunities for development and innovation in English education and instruction.

In this year’s conference, LLTC presents five keynote speakers from four countries: Australia, Singapore, the United States, and Indonesia who are experts in the field of educational technologies, second & foreign language pedagogy & instruction, literacy, and curriculum developments. Each of the speakers will be sharing interesting research topics that are inspirational for educators as well as researchers in enhancing innovations in language teaching amidst the current online learning trends. There will be also over 50 interesting titles of presentation presented by presenters from all across the country and abroad. This makes me certain that these two days we are going to share, learn, and collaborate in fruitful discussions with other language teaching enthusiasts in this conference.

I shall extend my gratitude to all committee members from PBI Sanata Dharma, as well as to the Faculty of Teachers Training and Education without whom this conference would not have been possible. I would also like to express a sincere gratitude to all parties who have worked hand in hand to make this conference run well. We sincerely hope that LLTC 2021 would be the great place for networking, communicating, and collaborating ideas for learning and innovation in English language education in Indonesia. Have a great conference!
